In Memoriam: 1913 – 1965
Brother Victor Coleman, O.S.B.

The Good Lord chose Wednesday, August 11th to call our Brother Victor Coleman, O.S.B. from his service on earth. Brother Victor was one of the founding monks of Mount Michael Abbey in 1956.

The former Edson Frederick Coleman, Brother Victor was a native of Syracuse, New York. He attended grammar and high school there and received his bachelor degree in music at Syracuse University. Upon graduation he spent three years in the Signal Corps of the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Originally a monk of Immaculate Conception Abbey in Conception, Missouri, and Brother Victor entered the novitiate there September 7, 1952. He professed perpetual vows on August 6, 1957. In June, he arrived at Mount Michael.

On the evening before the funeral services, Fraters Dunstan Cullings, O.S.B. and Hugh Preister, O.S.B. led many friends of Brother Victor in a rosary at the chapel of Saint John Seminary. A Pontifical Requiem Mass was con-celebrated by Father Abbot Raphael Walsh, O.S.B., the fellow monks of Brother Victor, and a few diocesan priests, on Friday, August 13th at 10:00 A.M. burial services were held in the Mount Michael Abbey Cemetery.

In his homily at the Eucharistic con-celebration, Father Abbot emphasized the importance in his life that Brother Victor placed on serving others. He performed many tasks around the Abbey and Seminary, which benefited many unknowing people. “As you live, so shall you die” and Brother Victor left us while working in the Seminary building. The community at Mount Michael Abbey and Saint John Seminary feel confident that he who remembered us with good works on earth surely will not forget us in the favor of the Lord.
