Spring: A Time of New Life at Mount Michael

More Pictures - Dick and Jane's Babys

Spring has Sprung! At last the cold and grayness of winter is being replaced by warm days, green grass and flowers. Along with these usual signs of new life is the surprise arrival of a foal for Bro. Mel. When Brother added a new filley to the herd last fall he had no idea that she was in a motherly way. Sunday April 7th marked the birth of a new little filley. She has been named Shadowfax from Tolkien's book "The Two Towers". This fall and next year Bro. Mel will begin working with Shadowfax with the hope that in a couple of years she will become a good camp horse for Camp St. John. A few years back "Rodney" was born at the Mount and has become a favorite of Campers.

The entire monastic community is anxiously awaiting the hatching. It is estimated that the eggs should hatch somewhere around the May 1st. So far both parents are being very attentive to the nest with Dick taking his turn and giving Jane the occasional break. Just the other day as a cold spell broke and the building cooled Dick and Jane sat together on the nest to keep the eggs warm. They are a very loving couple. Meanwhile the bachelor Charlie sits quietly in his cage nearby enjoying the peace and quite before the new family arrives.
