For
40 years the people of St. James Parish in Omaha held their Sunday
services in the basement of the school's Gym. This past November
their new Church was completed. Abbot Raphael Walsh O.S.B., retired
Abbot of Mount Michael who currently serves as an associate pastor
invited the Mount Michael monastic community over to celebrate Sunday
Vespers and see the new church. Of particular significance to Mount
Michael is the Crucifix at St. James. The Corpus once hung in the
Mount Michael Chapel before it was renovated several years
ago. What once stood as dominating and overwhelming in the small
Chapel fits nicely in the large environs of St. James. The Corpus
was refinished to a lighter tone and is now hung on a dark wooden
Cross. It looks great in its new home.
After Vespers Abbot Raphael gave a
short presentation on the symbolism and layout of the new Church. Afterward the
monks gathered in the parish hall for refreshments and a wonderful beef stew.
The monks enjoyed the outing immensely and are quite grateful for Abbot Raphael's
fine hospitality. |
