A Monastic Easter
The Mount Michael Monastic
Community started off the Easter Tridium on Thursday evening with a traditional
Last Supper meal served by the Abbot to the community and guests which
included Mr. Ridder and his family along with a good number of seniors
and students who would serve mass afterwards. After dinner, everyone
gathered in the chapel for Mass. Many guests joined the monks for the
service, which included the traditional washing of the feet. Several
Mount Michael seniors were invited for this role.
Friday
was reserved for work, prayer, and silence. At 3:00 PM a service was
held in remembrance of the crucifixion. After the reading of the
passion, monks and guests venerated the cross, which was followed by
communion.
On Friday night and Saturday morning, Bro. Jerome and Bro. Luke worked on decorating
the chapel in preparation for the Easter Service. At the same time others cleaned
the chapel and prepared for the liturgy. The Monastic Community had singing
practice at 5:15 just before evening prayer (Vespers). The two-hour Easter
Vigil began at 8:30 pm with the ritual of light followed by six readings. The
service was well attended with over twenty students or alumni with their families.
Afterwards guests joined the monks in the dining room for coffee, rolls, and
Easter treats.
On Sunday the monks rested, visited family, or spent the afternoon
watching the “Masters” or the movie “Seabiscuit”.
After Vespers the monastic community gathered in the Abbey for a party
and a delightful dinner prepared by Bro. Jerome.
