Thoughts on The Rule as Summer Wanes
Dear Oblates,
I hope this letter finds you all well. Summer seems to have passed so quickly. I know that my school preparations suggest the change of pace that summer brings will soon end.
Speaking of preparations, Bro. Jerome and I look forward to another year with you. We would like to focus on St. Benedict’s longest chapter in the Rule for our study this coming year. The longest chapter? Chapter 7 on humility, of course.
We will also use St. Bernard of Clairvaux’s treatise on humility that I am sure you will find very interesting. The title for St. Bernard’s work is a bit misleading for he really writes about pride. As St. Bernard himself explains: “I did not think I could fittingly describe the steps up (humility) when I know more about going down (pride) than going up.” St. Bernard’s honesty is refreshing especially in light of recent national events.
Bro. Jerome asked that I include some thoughts on Lectio Divina by Benedictine Fr. Luke Dysinger. This can be found on Page 2.
As the parched land responds to the refreshing and needed rain so too will our hearts respond to the refreshing and needed nourishment that God’s Word provides.
